The BlackBerry Administration Service is a dynamic, web-based, centralized administrative console designed to provide a complete and efficient way to manage the BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution. The console is customized, so that it only shows the administrator the relevant tasks based on their role. It provides what is needed to set up and manage the high availability architecture, wirelessly deploy BlackBerry smartphones, manage user settings, deploy and manage applications, assign permissions, control groups, and update BlackBerry® Device Software.

Enterprise-wide application deployments and upgrades are efficient and can be done without impact to BlackBerry Smartphone users. With enhanced job management, throttling and scheduling, deployments can now be managed around peak business hours. Jobs can be scheduled to avoid interference with day-to-day business continuity which solves the problem of the IT Administration team needing to work after hours. Jobs and tasks can both be throttled, with individual throttling thresholds available for varying types of tasks including IT policies, application distribution, device software distribution and device software application settings.

Custom roles and enhanced group functionality provide more controls that allow administrators to assign BlackBerry Smartphone functionality according to employee roles within the company. IT managers can now assign role-based permissions to IT staff, tailoring BlackBerry administrative tasks to the specific role of the administrator. Group membership capabilities have been expanded, with multiple levels of nested groups possible, and the ability to assign roles, software configurations and IT policies to groups.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server v5.0 administration has been fine-tuned with the addition of the BlackBerry® Enterprise Transporter. This tool allows administrators to migrate BlackBerry Smartphone users from one BlackBerry domain to another, without requiring action by the user. To help ensure that upgrades to BlackBerry Enterprise Server v5.0 go smoothly, a test environment can be built first and then the BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter can be used to move users into the production environment.
